    • Soyuz isn’t open!

The LP component that BUILDS Ubuntu..that deals with mirrors… release engineering as we understand it… is still going to be CLOSED

      Pathetic

    • I think it’s dumb to announce you’re going to open source something before you do. Open source it and then tell us about it. Good intentions aren’t worth so much…

    • It’s the end result that ultimately matters. Intentions are approximately as useful as a quick puff of hot air, but before we condemn the move to opensource Launchpad, let’s wait and see what actually happens :-)

    • The more the open up the better. I think LP is pretty slick, but I won’t put any of my own projects there since it’s been closed. They announced July 21, 2009 …. let’s see (and hope) they can do that.

I do agree with Máirín … as much as I’m happy to hear they set a date to open up LP, it’s not worth much until it IS open. Until then I plan to continue my same method of working with LP … if there is someone else’s project up there I’ll commit patches, but I won’t put anything of mine there.

    • It is a matter of fact that building a complex platform like Launchpad may take years until is polished and even possible to deploy in a variety of environments. In the mean while, a “customized” (see a pile of hacks) version can totally cover the needs of a single vendor. Between releasing a crappy and undocumented piece of code that “just gets the job done” and “release early, release often” strategy there is a question of elegance, personal taste and responsibility.

On the bright side, at least Canonical has plans to Open Source one of their greatest assets, whereas RedHat has a few technologies in RHEL that has no intention to give away… So much for Fedora’s sponsor openness.
